"Do you know what my father said to your father?" He said: I said: "No." He said: "My father said to your father: O Abū Mūsā, would it please you that our Islam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, our striving with him, and all our deeds with him were kept for us as a cool, pleasant reward, and that for every deed we did after him we would escape with it being even, neither for us nor against us?" He said: "Your father said to my father: By Allah, we strove after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we prayed, we fasted, we did much good, and many people accepted Islam at our hands, and we hope for reward for that." My father said: "But as for me, by the One in whose hand is the soul of ʿUmar, I would love that this were kept for us, and that for everything we did afterwards we would escape it even, neither for us nor against us." So I said: "By Allah, your father was better than my father."
