So ʿAmr wrote: "Peace. To proceed: At your service, at your service! A caravan has come to you, whose first part is with you while its last part is with me; and I hope that I may find a way to carry [provisions] by sea." When the first caravan arrived, he called al-Zubayr ؓ and said: "Go out with the first of this caravan and face Najd with it, and bring to me every household you are able to bring to me. As for whoever you are unable to bring, order for each household a camel with what is on it, and order them to wear two garments, to slaughter the camel, to melt down its fat, to cut its meat into strips and dry it, and to make sandals from its hide. Then let them take a lump of dried meat, a lump of fat, and a bowl of flour, and cook and eat, until Allah brings them provision." But al-Zubayr refused to go out. So he said: "By Allah, you will not find the like of it until you depart from the world." Then he called another man, I think it was Ṭalḥah, but he refused. Then he called Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ, and he went out for that.
