Ibn Ziyād appointed me over the treasury (bayt al-māl). A man from his household came to me with a written order that said: "Give the master of the kitchen eight hundred dirhams." I said to him: "Stay where you are." Then I went in to Ibn Ziyād and told him, and I said: "ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ appointed ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd over the judiciary and the treasury, ʿUthmān b. Ḥunayf over what the Euphrates irrigates, and ʿAmmār b. Yāsir over the prayer and the army. He provided for them a sheep every day. He gave half of it, with its offal and its trotters, to ʿAmmār b. Yāsir, because he was over the prayer and the army; he gave a quarter of it to ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, and a quarter of it to ʿUthmān b. Ḥunayf. Then he said: 'Indeed, a property from which a sheep is taken every day will quickly be depleted.'" Ibn Ziyād said: "Put down the key and go wherever you wish."
