ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) ruled in the case of a woman who left behind her husband, her daughter, her maternal brothers, her full brothers (from her father), and her mother. He made the maternal brothers and the full brothers partners, and made the third shared equally among them. A man said: "O Commander of the Believers, in such-and-such year you did not make them partners." ʿUmar said: "That was according to what we ruled on that day, and this is according to what we rule today."
