ʿAbdullāh used to let the grandfather share with the brothers up to a third. If a third was better for him than sharing equally, he would give him the third, and he would give every holder of a fixed share his share. He would not give inheritance to a maternal brother or a maternal sister along with the grandfather. He would not count a paternal brother against a full brother (of the father and mother) in the sharing, and he would not give inheritance to a brother's son along with the grandfather. If there was a full sister (of the father and mother), a paternal brother, and a grandfather, he would give the full sister half and the grandfather half, and he would give the brother nothing. If there were brothers, sisters, and a grandfather, together with someone who had a fixed share, he would give every holder of a fixed share his share. Then, if a third of what remained was better for him than sharing equally, he would give him a third of what remained; and if sharing equally was better for him, he would share equally. And if a sixth of the entire estate was better for him than sharing equally, he would give him the sixth; and if sharing equally was better for him than a sixth of the entire estate, he would share equally.
