Sulaymān b. Hishām said to me: "This man – meaning al-Zuhrī – does not leave us to eat anything without ordering us to perform ablution because of it." I said: "I asked Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib about it, and he said: When you eat it, it is good, so you have no ablution to make for it; and when it comes out, it is filthy, so you have to make ablution for it." He said: "I see only that the two of you have differed. Is there anyone in the town?" I said: "Yes, the most senior man in the Arabian Peninsula." He said: "Who?" I said: "ʿAṭāʾ." So he sent for him and he was brought. He said: "These two have differed before me, so what do you say?" He said
