When ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān (may God be pleased with him) was besieged and his house was surrounded, he looked out over the people and said: "I adjure you by God, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ was on the mountain of Ḥirāʾ, and said: 'Be still, Ḥirāʾ, for upon you there is only a prophet, or a ṣiddīq, or a martyr'?" They said: "O God, yes." He said: "I adjure you by God, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said at the expedition of al-ʿUsrah: 'Who will spend an expenditure that will be accepted?' while the people at that time were in hardship and distress, and I equipped a third of that army from my own wealth?" They said: "O God, yes." Then he said: "I adjure you by God, do you know that no one could drink from the well of Rūmah except by paying a price, and I bought it with my own wealth and made it for the rich, the poor, and the wayfarer?" They said: "O God, yes," and he went on to mention other things.

machine translationAbū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Zayd b. Abī Unaysah, Shuʿbah and ʿAbd al-Kabīr b. Dīnār narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī. Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq and Isrāʾīl b. Yūnus differed from them, and narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. The statement of Shuʿbah and those who followed him is closer to the correct view.
