Some men had surplus lands in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they used to lease them out for a third, a quarter, and a half. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever has a surplus of land, let him cultivate it or lend it to his brother; and if he refuses, let him keep his land." This is the wording of the hadith of Bishr. And in the narration of ʿUbaydullāh: "Some men had surplus lands, and they used to have them cultivated for a third, a quarter, and a half. That reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he said: Whoever has land, let him cultivate it or lend it to his brother; and if he does not do so, let him keep his land."
