We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys, until, when we were at al-Baydāʾ or Dhāt al-Jaysh, a necklace of mine broke. So the Prophet ﷺ stopped to look for it, and the people stopped with him, though they were not at a source of water and had no water with them. The people came to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and said: "Do you not see what ʿĀʾishah has done? She has detained the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people, though they are not at a source of water and have no water with them." So Abū Bakr came, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head on my thigh, and he said: "You have detained the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people, though they are not at a source of water and have no water with them." He rebuked me and said what Allah willed him to say, and he began to poke my side with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving except the place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my thigh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept until morning without water, so Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed the verse of tayammum, and they performed tayammum with clean earth. Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr said: "This is not the first of your blessings, O family of Abū Bakr." She said: "Then we made the camel that I had been riding rise, and we found the necklace beneath it."
