I was performing tawaf with ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar, when a goldsmith came to him and said: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, I work gold, then I sell a piece of it for more than its weight, so I take the excess in return for the work of my hands on it." ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar forbade him from that, but the goldsmith kept repeating the question to him, and ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar kept forbidding him, until he reached the door of the mosque or his riding animal, which he wished to mount. Then ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar said: "A dinar for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham, with no excess between them. This is the covenant of our Prophet ﷺ to us, and our covenant to you."
