I became ritually impure in the sand, so I rolled around like an animal rolls. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, and he said: "Tayammum would have been enough for you for that."

  • Taḥāwī

machine translationWhat al-Ṭaḥāwī mentioned, and al-ʿAynī accepted in ʿUmdat al-Qārī, is that the hadith of ʿAmmār is not fit to be used as evidence for tayammum extending to the wrists, or the elbows, or the shoulders, or the armpits, because of its inconsistency (iḍṭirāb). But the inconsistency here does no harm, because the narrations of the elbows and the shoulders are weaker and outweighed in comparison with the others, so they are discounted. As for the narrations of the armpits, their story came earlier than the story of the narrations of the two palms, so they do not conflict with it. Thus the narrations of the two palms remain free from criticism and conflict. End of the words of the author of al-Siʿāyah, abridged.

  • ʿAlī al-Madīnī

machine translationThis hadith is a mistake in the statement of Sufyān: "Nājiyah b. Kaʿb". It is rather Nājiyah b. Khuffāf al-ʿAnazī, and Nājiyah b. Khuffāf is Abū Khuffāf al-ʿAnazī. In my view he did not hear it from ʿAmmār, because Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq met this Nājiyah, and this is not an early one.
