✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent horses toward Najd, and they brought back a man from Banu Hanifah, Thumamah b. Uthal, the chief of the people of al-Yamamah. They tied him to one of the columns of the mosque. The Messenger of God ﷺ came out to him and said to him, "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He said, "I have good, O Muhammad. If you kill, you kill one whose blood is sought; if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful; and if you want wealth, ask and you will be given whatever you wish." The Messenger of God ﷺ left him until the next day, then said to him, "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He said, "What I told you: if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful; if you kill, you kill one whose blood is sought; and if you want wealth, ask and you will be given whatever you wish." The Messenger of God ﷺ left him until the day after, and then said, "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He said, "I have what I told you: if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful; if you kill, you kill one whose blood is sought; and if you want wealth, ask and you will be given whatever you wish." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Release Thumamah." They took him to some palm trees near the mosque, and he bathed. Then he entered the mosque and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. O Muhammad, by God, there was no face on earth more hateful to me than your face, but your face has become the most beloved of all faces to me. By God, there was no religion more hateful to me than your religion, but your religion has become the most beloved religion to me. By God, there was no land more hateful to me than your land, but your land has become the most beloved of lands to me. Your cavalry seized me while I was intending to perform Umrah. So what do you think?" The Messenger of God ﷺ gave him good news and ordered him to perform Umrah. When he arrived in Makkah, someone said to him, "Have you apostatized?" He said, "No, but I have submitted with Muhammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ. And by God, no grain of wheat will come to you from al-Yamamah until the Messenger of God ﷺ permits it."
