✧ When Abdullah b. Ubayy died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was called to pray over him, so he stood for him. When he stood over him intending to pray, I moved until I stood before his chest and said: “O Messenger of Allah, over the enemy of Allah, Abdullah b. Ubayy, who said on such-and-such a day…”—enumerating his days. He said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was smiling, until when I had said too much, he said: “Move away from me, O Umar. I was given a choice and I chose. It was said: Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them. If I knew that by increasing beyond seventy he would be forgiven, I would have increased.” He said: Then he prayed over him and walked with him, and stood at his grave until it was finished. He said: I was amazed at myself and my boldness toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: By Allah, it was only a short while before these two verses were revealed: “And do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.” After that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pray over any hypocrite, nor stand at his grave, until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, took him.
