✧ When we arrived in Madinah, we ate from its fruits and found them disagreeable, and a fever struck us there. The Prophet ﷺ was inquiring about Badr. When news reached us that the polytheists were advancing, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Badr, and Badr is a well. We reached it before the polytheists, and we found two men there, one of them from Quraysh and a freedman of 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt. The Qurashi escaped, but we captured the freedman of 'Uqbah. We began asking him, 'How many are the people?' He would say, 'By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in strength.' Whenever he said that, the Muslims would beat him until they brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet asked him, 'How many are the people?' He said, 'By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in strength.' The Prophet tried hard to make him tell how many they were, but he refused. Then the Prophet ﷺ asked him, 'How many camels do they slaughter?' He said, 'Ten every day.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The people are a thousand; each camel is for a hundred.' Then a light rain fell on us at night, and we went under the trees and shields to take shelter from the rain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent the night calling upon his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, saying: 'O Allah, if You destroy this group, You will not be worshipped.' When dawn broke, he called out, 'Prayer, O servants of Allah!' The people came from under the trees and shields, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer and exhorted us to fight. Then he said, 'The gathering of Quraysh is under this red hill of the mountain.' When the people approached us and we lined up against them, a man among them on a red camel was moving among the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O 'Ali, call Hamzah for me'—and he was the closest of them to the polytheists—'Who is the rider of the red camel, and what is he saying to them?' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If there is anyone among the people commanding good, perhaps it is the rider of the red camel.' Hamzah came and said, 'He is 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah, and he is forbidding fighting and saying to them: O people, I see a people who are eager to die, and you will not reach them while there is good among you. O people, tie it to my head today and say: 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah has become a coward, and you know that I am not the most cowardly of you.' Abu Jahl heard that and said, 'You say this? By Allah, if anyone other than you said this, I would bite him. Your lungs have filled your belly with fear.' 'Utbah said, 'Do you reproach me, O you with the yellowed backside? Today you will learn which of us is the coward.' Then 'Utbah came out, along with his brother Shaybah and his son al-Walid, out of zeal, and they said, 'Who will duel?' A group of six young men from the Ansar came out, and 'Utbah said, 'We do not want these; let some of our cousins from Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib duel us.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Rise, O 'Ali, and rise, O Hamzah, and rise, O 'Ubaydah b. al-Harith b. al-Muttalib.' Allah Almighty killed 'Utbah and Shaybah, the two sons of Rabi'ah, and al-Walid b. 'Utbah, and 'Ubaydah was wounded. We killed seventy of them and captured seventy. A short man from the Ansar brought al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib as a captive. Al-'Abbas said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, this man did not capture me. A bald man with the most beautiful face, riding a piebald horse, captured me; I do not see him among the people.' The Ansari said, 'I captured him, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Be quiet, for Allah Almighty has supported you with a noble angel.' 'Ali said: We captured from Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib al-'Abbas, 'Aqil, and Nawfal b. al-Harith.
