What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThis wording has been declared sound (ṣaḥḥaḥa). Abū Bakr al-Athram said: I said to Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, "Who says, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, through a sound route, 'When he recites, then be silent'?" He said: "The hadith of Ibn ʿAjlān which Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar narrates, and the hadith which Jarīr narrated from al-Taymī, and they claim that al-Muʿtamir narrated it." I said: "Yes, al-Muʿtamir narrated it." He said: "What more do you want?" So Aḥmad declared these two hadiths sound (ṣaḥḥaḥa).

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThis phrase is not preserved (maḥfūẓ); it is among the confusions (takhlīṭ) of Ibn ʿAjlān. Khārijah b. Muṣʿab also narrated it, following Ibn ʿAjlān, and Khārijah too is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationHis words "and when the imam recites, then be silent" are not preserved (ghayr maḥfūẓ) according to most of the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514

machine translationThis is not known from the sound hadith of Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar. Aḥmad said: I think he used to practise concealment (tadlīs). Al-Layth and Bukayr narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Abū l-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Layth also narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, and from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Muṣʿab b. Muḥammad, Zayd b. Aslam and al-Qaʿqāʿ, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah. None of them said in it "and when he recites, then be silent". Suhayl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ also narrated it from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Abū Khālid was not corroborated in his addition.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514
  • Muslim

machine translationIt is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) in my view, meaning the addition "and when he recites, then be silent".

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514
  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translationThis addition, "and when he recites, then be silent", is not preserved (maḥfūẓ), and the error in our view is from Abū Khālid.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514
  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī

machine translationAl-Mundhirī criticised him in his Mukhtaṣar and said: There is something to examine in this, for this Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar is Sulaymān b. Ḥayyān, one of the trustworthy (thiqāt) narrators whom al-Bukhārī and Muslim used as evidence. Moreover, he was not alone in this addition; Abū Saʿd Muḥammad b. Saʿd al-Anṣārī al-Ashhalī al-Madanī, who settled in Baghdad, corroborated him on it. He heard from Ibn ʿAjlān and is trustworthy (thiqah); al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Maʿīn declared him trustworthy.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 9514
