✧ Someone who witnessed ʿAlī when he mounted informed me. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said, “In the name of God.” When he settled he said, “Praise be to God.” Then he said, “Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could not have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will return.” Then he praised God three times and magnified Him three times. Then he said, “O God, there is no god but You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.” Then he laughed. It was asked, “What makes you laugh, O Commander of the Faithful?” He said, “I saw the Prophet ﷺ do as I did and say as I said, then laugh. We said, ‘What makes you laugh, O Prophet of God?’ He said, ‘The servant—or he said: I marvel at the servant—when he says, “There is no god but You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You,” knowing that none forgives sins but He.’”
