The Prophet ﷺ returned from the dawn prayer one day and went to the women in the mosque. He stood before them and said, “O company of women, I have not seen anyone deficient in reason and religion who is more capable than you of carrying away the hearts of people of understanding. I have seen that you will form the majority of the inhabitants of the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, so draw near to Allah as much as you are able.” Among the women was the wife of Abdullah b. Masud. She went to Abdullah b. Masud and told him what she had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and she took some jewelry belonging to her. Ibn Masud said, “Where are you taking this jewelry?” She replied, “I will use it to draw near to Allah ﷻ and His Messenger, so that perhaps Allah will not make me one of the inhabitants of the Fire.” He said, “Woe to you! Bring it here and give it in charity to me and my children, for we are a proper place for it.” She said, “No, by Allah, not until I take it to the Prophet ﷺ.” She went to seek permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ. They said to the Prophet ﷺ, “This is Zaynab seeking permission to enter, O Messenger of Allah.” He asked, “Which of the Zaynabs is she?” They replied, “The wife of Abdullah b. Masud.” He said, “Give her permission to enter.” She entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I heard a statement from you, then I returned to Ibn Masud and told him about it. I took my jewelry to use it to draw near to Allah and to you, hoping that Allah would not make me one of the inhabitants of the Fire. Ibn Masud said to me, ‘Give it in charity to me and my children, for we are a proper place for it.’ I said, ‘Not until I seek the Prophet’s ﷺ permission.’” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Give it in charity to him and his sons, for they are a proper place for it.” Then she said, “O Messenger of Allah, what did you mean by what I heard from you when you stood before us: ‘I have never seen anyone deficient in reason and religion who is more capable than you of carrying away the hearts of people of understanding’?” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the deficiency in our religion and reason?” He replied, “As for the deficiency in your religion that I mentioned, it is the menstruation that affects you. One of you remains for as long as Allah wills without praying or fasting, and that is part of the deficiency in your religion. As for the deficiency in your reason that I mentioned, it is your testimony: the testimony of a woman is only half a testimony.”
