حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَحْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ
كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُخَافِتُ بِصَوْتِهِ إِذَا قَرَأَ، وَكَانَ عُمَرُ يَجْهَرُ بِقِرَاءَتِهِ، وَكَانَ عَمَّارٌ إِذَا قَرَأَ يَأْخُذُ مِنْ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ وَهَذِهِ، فَذُكِرَ ذَاكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ: لِمَ تُخَافِتُ ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي لَأُسْمِعُ مَنْ أُنَاجِي، وَقَالَ لِعُمَرَ: لِمَ تَجْهَرُ بِقِرَاءَتِكَ ؟ قَالَ: أُفْزِعُ الشَّيْطَانَ، وَأُوقِظُ الْوَسْنَانَ، وَقَالَ لِعَمَّارٍ: لِمَ تَأْخُذُ مِنْ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ وَهَذِهِ ؟ قَالَ: أَتَسْمَعُنِي أَخْلِطُ بِهِ مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: فَكُلُّهُ طَيِّبٌ

✧ Abu Bakr used to lower his voice when he recited, 'Umar used to recite loudly, and 'Ammar used to take from this surah and that. That was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said to Abu Bakr: 'Why do you lower your voice?' He said: 'I let the One I am conversing with hear.' He said to 'Umar: 'Why do you recite loudly?' He said: 'I frighten Satan and wake the drowsy.' He said to 'Ammar: 'Why do you take from this surah and that?' He said: 'Do you hear me mixing with it what is not from it?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then all of it is good.'

machine translationHe was asked: "Which is correct in your view, Bilāl or ʿAmmār?" Abū Zurʿah said: "The people of Medina narrated it as being Bilāl, and they are more knowledgeable. Even though their narration is mursal, had they not heard it from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, they would not have said it."
