✧ Wine was prohibited three times. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah while they were drinking wine and consuming gains from gambling. They asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about them, and Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ: They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin and benefits for people, to the end of the verse. The people said: It has not been prohibited to us; He only said: In them is great sin. They continued drinking wine until one day a man among the Muhajirun led his companions in the Maghrib prayer and mixed up his recitation. So Allah revealed a verse stricter than it: O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying. The people continued drinking until one of them would come to prayer while sober. Then a verse stricter than that was revealed: O you who believe, wine, gambling, sacrificial stones, and divining arrows are only filth from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed. They said: We have stopped, our Lord. The people said: O Messenger of Allah, people were killed in the cause of Allah or died on their beds while they used to drink wine and consume gains from gambling, and Allah has now made it filth from the work of Satan. So Allah revealed: There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear and believe, to the end of the verse. The Prophet ﷺ said: If it had been prohibited to them, they would have left it as you have left it.
