✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married him to Fatimah, he sent with her a velvet cloak, a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber, two millstones, a water skin, and two jars. One day 'Ali said to Fatimah: 'By Allah, I have drawn water until my chest hurts. Allah has brought your father captives, so go and ask him for a servant.' She said: 'And I, by Allah, have ground until my hands are blistered.' She went to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: 'What brings you, my little daughter?' She said: 'I came to greet you,' and she was too shy to ask him and returned. He said: 'What did you do?' She said: 'I was too shy to ask him.' We both came to him. 'Ali said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I have drawn water until my chest hurts.' Fatimah said: 'I have ground until my hands are blistered. Allah has brought you captives and plenty, so give us a servant.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'By Allah, I will not give you while I leave the people of the Suffah with their stomachs empty, not finding anything to spend on them. But I will sell them and spend their price on them.' They returned. Then the Prophet ﷺ came to them when they had entered their blanket—if they covered their heads, their feet were exposed, and if they covered their feet, their heads were exposed. They rose, and he said: 'Stay where you are.' Then he said: 'Shall I not inform you of something better than what you asked me?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Words that Jibril ﷺ taught me: Glorify Allah ten times after every prayer, praise Him ten times, and magnify Him ten times. And when you go to your bed, glorify thirty-three times, praise thirty-three times, and magnify thirty-four times.' He said: 'By Allah, I have not left them since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught them to me.' Ibn al-Kawwa' said to him: 'Not even on the night of Siffin?' He said: 'May Allah fight you, O people of Iraq. Yes, not even on the night of Siffin.'
