حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ
أَخَذَتِ النَّاسَ رِيحٌ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ حَاجٌّ. فَاشْتَدَّتْ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ: مَنْ يُحَدِّثُنَا عَنِ الرِّيحِ ؟ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعُوا إِلَيْهِ شَيْئًا. فَبَلَغَنِي الَّذِي سَأَلَ عَنْهُ عُمَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَاسْتَحْثَثْتُ رَاحِلَتِي حَتَّى أَدْرَكْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ سَأَلْتَ عَنِ الرِّيحِ، وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: الرِّيحُ مِنْ رَوْحِ اللهِ تَأْتِي بِالرَّحْمَةِ وَتَأْتِي بِالْعَذَابِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهَا فَلَا تَسُبُّوهَا، وَسَلُوا اللهَ خَيْرَهَا، وَاسْتَعِيذُوا بِهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا

✧ A wind overtook the people on the road to Makkah while Umar b. al-Khattab was performing Hajj. It became severe upon them, so Umar said to those around him: “Who will tell us something about the wind?” They did not return any answer to him. The news of what Umar had asked about reached me, so I urged my mount until I caught up with him and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, I was told that you asked about the wind, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘The wind is from the mercy of Allah. It brings mercy and it brings punishment. So when you see it, do not revile it, but ask Allah for its good and seek refuge in Him from its evil.’”
