حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

مَثَلُ الْبَخِيلِ وَالْمُنْفِقِ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلَيْنِ عَلَيْهِمَا جُنَّتَانِ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ، مِنْ لَدُنْ ثُدِيِّهِمَا إِلَى تَرَاقِيهِمَا، فَأَمَّا الْمُنْفِقُ فَلَا يُنْفِقُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا اتَّسَعَتْ حَلْقَةٌ مَكَانَهَا فَهُوَ يُوَسِّعُهَا عَلَيْهِ، وَأَمَّا الْبَخِيلُ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَزْدَادُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا اسْتِحْكَامًا

Translation

✧ The likeness of the miser and the spender is like two men upon whom are two coats of iron from their chests to their collarbones. As for the spender, he does not spend but that a ring widens in its place, and he keeps widening it upon himself. As for the miser, it only increases in tightness upon him.
