✧ [The Messenger of Allah] ﷺ prayed one of the two evening prayers—either Zuhr, and I mostly think it was ʿAsr—and he said the salutation after two rakʿahs. Then he went to a trunk that he used to pray toward and sat by it angry. (Sufyan said: Then he went to a trunk in the qiblah that he used to lean his back against, and he leaned his back against it.) He said: Then the hasty people went out saying, “The prayer has been shortened.” Among the people were Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, but they were too awed to speak to him. Then Dhu al-Yadayn said, “O Messenger of Allah, was the prayer shortened or did you forget?” He said, “The prayer was not shortened, and I did not forget.” He said, “You prayed only two rakʿahs.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked [at the people], and they said, “Yes.” So he stood and prayed two rakʿahs, then said the salutation. Then he said the takbir and prostrated as in his [usual] prostration or longer, then raised [his head] and said the takbir, then prostrated and said the takbir.
