✧ Umar b. al-Khattab said to the people: 'What do you think about the surplus of this wealth that remains with us?' The people said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, we have kept you from your family, your property, and your trade, so it is yours.' He said to me: 'What do you say?' I said: 'They have advised you.' He said to me: 'Speak.' So I said: 'Why do you turn your certainty into speculation?' He said: 'You must explain what you said.' I said: 'Indeed, by Allah, I will explain it. Do you remember when the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sent you as a collector, and you went to al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib, and he withheld his charity from you, and something occurred between you two? You said to me: 'Come with me to the Prophet ﷺ.' We found him in a bad mood, so we returned. Then we went to him the next morning and found him in a good mood. You told him what al-Abbas had done. He said to you: 'Do you not know that a man's paternal uncle is like his father?' And we mentioned to him what we had seen of his bad mood on the first day and his good mood on the second day. He said: 'You both came to me on the first day when I still had two dinars of the charity left, and that was what you saw of my bad mood. And you came to me today after I had sent them out, and that is what you saw of my good mood.' Umar said: 'You have spoken the truth. By Allah, I will thank you for the first and the last.'
