machine translationShuʿbah and al-Thawrī differed regarding the chain of this report. Al-Thawrī said: from Sālim, from Jābān, from Ibn ʿAmr. Shuʿbah said: from Sālim, from Nubayṭ, from Jābān. Both are meticulous (mutqin) memorizers (ḥāfiẓ), except that al-Thawrī was more knowledgeable about the hadiths of the people of his own town than Shuʿbah and a better memorizer of them than him, especially the hadiths of al-Aʿmash, Abū Isḥāq and Manṣūr. So the report is connected (muttaṣil) from Sālim, from Jābān; he heard it from him, and he also heard it from Nubayṭ, from Jābān. At one time he narrated it as Shuʿbah said, and at another as Sufyān said.
