✧ It reached the Prophet ﷺ that I fast continuously and pray at night. He said: Either he sent for me or I met him, and he said: 'Was I not told that you fast without breaking your fast and pray at night? Do not do that, for your eyes have a share, your soul has a share, and your family has a share. Fast and break your fast, pray and sleep, and fast one day out of every ten, and you will have the reward of nine.' I said: 'I find myself stronger than that, O Prophet of Allah.' He said: 'Fast the fast of Dawud.' I said: 'How did Dawud fast, O Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'He would fast one day and break his fast one day, and he would not flee when he met the enemy.' I said: 'Who can guarantee me that, O Prophet of Allah?' Ata said: I do not know how he mentioned fasting forever, but the Prophet ﷺ said: 'He who fasts forever has not fasted.'
