✧ I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn, and the delegation of Hawazin came to him. They said: 'O Muhammad, we are root and tribe, so show favor to us, may Allah show favor to you, for there has befallen us of affliction what is not hidden from you.' He said: 'Choose between your women, your wealth, and your children.' They said: 'You have given us a choice between our lineages and our wealth; we choose our children.' He said: 'As for what belongs to me and to the Banu Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours. When I have prayed Zuhr, say: We seek intercession through the Messenger of Allah with the believers, and through the believers with the Messenger of Allah, for our women and our children.' He said: So they did that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'As for what belongs to me and to the Banu Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours.' The Muhajirun said: 'What belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Ansar said the like. Uyayna b. Badr said: 'As for what belongs to me and to the Banu Fazara, no.' Al-Aqra' b. Habis said: 'As for me and the Banu Tamim, no.' Abbas b. Mirdas said: 'As for me and the Banu Sulaym, no.' The two tribes said: 'You lie; rather it is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O people, return to them their women and their children. Whoever holds onto anything of the spoils, he shall have from us six camels from the first thing Allah grants us as spoils.' Then he mounted his riding beast, and the people clung to him saying: 'Divide among us our spoils between us,' until they forced him to a samura tree, and his cloak was snatched away. He said: 'O people, return to me my cloak. By Allah, if you had as many livestock as the trees of Tihama, I would divide it among you; then you would not find me miserly, nor cowardly, nor a liar.' Then he drew near his camel, took a hair from its hump, placed it between his fingers, the index and the middle, then raised it and said: 'O people, I have none of this spoils, not even this hair, except the fifth. And the fifth is returned to you. So return even the needle and the thread, for misappropriation of spoils will be upon its people on the Day of Resurrection as shame, fire, and disgrace.' A man stood up with a ball of hair and said: 'I took this to repair the saddle pad of a camel of mine that had a sore.' He said: 'As for what belongs to me and to the Banu Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours.' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, now that it has reached what I see, I have no need of it,' and he threw it away.
