✧ Ibn Umar set out intending to perform Hajj at the time when al-Hajjaj had descended upon Ibn al-Zubayr. It was said to him: There is going to be fighting among the people, and we fear that they may prevent you. He said: You have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example. If so, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you to witness that I have made Umrah obligatory upon myself. Then he set out until he was at the back of al-Bayda'. He said: The matter of Hajj and Umrah is but one. I call you to witness that I have made Hajj obligatory along with my Umrah. And he brought a sacrificial animal which he bought at Qudayd. Then he went on until he reached Makkah, and he circumambulated the House and went between al-Safa and al-Marwa. He did no more than that, and he did not slaughter, did not shave, did not shorten, and did not exit ihram from anything he had been in a state of ihram for until the Day of Sacrifice, when he slaughtered and shaved. Then he considered that he had fulfilled his circumambulation for Hajj and Umrah with his first circumambulation. Then he said: This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.
