✧ I was with Ibn ʿUmar when a man came to him and said, 'O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, I buy these walled gardens that contain grapes, but we cannot sell all of them as grapes until we press them.' He said, 'Are you asking me about the price of wine? I will tell you a ḥadīth I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when he raised his head toward the sky, then bowed down and scratched the ground, and said, "Woe to the Children of Israel." ʿUmar said to him, "O Prophet of Allah, your words about the Children of Israel have alarmed us." He said, "You have nothing to fear from that. When fat was forbidden to them, they conspired over it, selling it and consuming its price. Likewise, the price of wine is forbidden to you."'
