✧ Whoever among you is able to be like the companion of the measure of rice, let him be like him. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who is the companion of the measure of rice?' He said: 'Three men went out and the sky clouded over them. They entered a cave, and a rock came from the top of the mountain until it sealed the entrance over them. They tried to move it but could not. They said to one another: You have fallen into a great matter; let each man supplicate with the best deed he has done, perhaps Allah, Exalted is He, will deliver us from this. One of them said: O Allah, You know that I had two elderly parents. I used to milk their milk and bring it to them after they had slept. I would spend the night standing with their milk in my hand, disliking to start with anyone before them or to wake them from their sleep, while my children cried around me. If You know that I did that only out of fear of You, then open a way for us. He said: The rock moved. He said: The second said: O Allah, You know that I had a cousin. Nothing You created was dearer to me than her. I sought her for herself, but she said: No, by Allah, not for less than one hundred dinars. So I collected them and gave them to her. When I sat with her as a man sits, she said: Fear Allah and do not break the seal except by its right. So I got up and left her. If You know that I did that only out of fear of You, then open a way for us. He said: The rock shifted until the sky appeared. The third said: O Allah, You know that I hired a laborer for a measure of rice. When evening came, I offered him his due, but he refused to take it and went away, leaving me. I felt uneasy about it and invested it for him, and put it in order until I bought cows and their herdsman with it. He met me after some time and said: Fear Allah and give me my wages, and do not wrong me. I said: Go to that cattle and its herdsman and take them. He said: Fear Allah and do not mock me. I said: I am not mocking you. So he went and drove them away. If You know that I did that seeking Your pleasure out of fear of You, then open a way for us. So the rock rolled away, and they came out walking.' [In the edition of Jam'iyyat al-Maknaz al-Islami: 'so she said'; in the edition of Mu'assasat al-Risalah: 'he said'.]
