✧ I asked Ibn ‘Umar, saying: “O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, are the two who invoke mutual curses separated?” He said: “Glory be to God, yes. The first one to ask about that was so-and-so. He said: ‘O Messenger of God, what do you think if one of us sees his wife committing an indecency, how should he act? If he remains silent, he remains silent about a grave matter; if he speaks, it is the same.’ The Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent and did not answer him. He then rose for his need. Later, he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: ‘I have been tested with what I asked you about.’ He said: ‘Then God Almighty revealed these verses in Surat al-Nur: “And those who accuse their wives...” until the end of the verses. He called the man, recited them to him, reminded him of God Almighty, and informed him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter.’ He said: ‘By the One who sent you with the truth, I did not lie about her.’ Then he called the woman, admonished her, reminded her, and informed her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said: ‘By the One who sent you with the truth, he is a liar.’ Then he called the man, and he testified four testimonies by God that he was indeed truthful, and the fifth that the curse of God be upon him if he was a liar. Then he called the woman, and she testified four testimonies by God that he was indeed a liar, and the fifth that the wrath of God be upon her if he was truthful. Then he separated them.”
