✧ When Ḥafṣah became widowed—she had been married to Khunayth b. Ḥudhāfah—ʿUmar met ʿUthmān and offered her to him. ʿUthmān said, ‘I have no need for women, and I will consider it.’ Then he met Abū Bakr and offered her to him, and Abū Bakr remained silent. ʿUmar felt anger in himself toward Abū Bakr. But then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had proposed to her. ʿUmar met Abū Bakr and said, ‘I offered her to ʿUthmān and he rejected me, and I offered her to you and you remained silent. My anger at you was more intense than my anger at ʿUthmān, even though he rejected me.’ Abū Bakr said, ‘He had mentioned something about her matter, and it was a secret, so I disliked revealing the secret.’
