  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationIt is a hadith that revolves around Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr, who is a shaykh and not a proof in what he is alone in transmitting. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq and al-Walīd b. Kathīr narrated it from him. Some of them say in it: from Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar, from his father; and some of them say in it: from Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar, from his father. Ḥammād b. Salamah also narrated it from ʿĀṣim b. al-Mundhir, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar, from his father, and all of them raise it to the Prophet (marfūʿ). ʿĀṣim b. al-Mundhir is, in their view, soft (layyin), not a proof.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 4818
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationSuch inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in the chain requires withholding judgement about adopting this hadith.
