✧ I already knew that land used to be rented during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ in return for whatever grew on the water channels and something of straw—I do not know how much—and that Ibn Umar used to rent out his land during the era of Abu Bakr, the era of Umar, the era of Uthman, and the beginning of Muawiya's rule, until at its end he learned that Rafi was narrating a prohibition of the Messenger of God ﷺ concerning that. So he came to him while I was with him and asked him, and he said: Yes, the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the leasing of farms. So Ibn Umar abandoned it and would no longer rent it out. Then, when he was asked, he would say: Ibn Khadij claimed that the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the leasing of farms.
