✧ Umar b. al-Khattab surpassed the people in four things: by mentioning the captives on the day of Badr, he ordered that they be killed, then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'Had it not been for a decree from Allah that had preceded, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took' (8:68); and by mentioning the veil, he ordered the wives of the Prophet ﷺ to veil themselves, so Zaynab said to him: 'Are you over us, O Ibn al-Khattab, while the revelation descends upon us in our houses?' Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'And when you ask them for something, ask them from behind a veil' (33:53); and by the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for him: 'O Allah, support Islam with Umar'; and by his opinion regarding Abu Bakr, he was the first of the people to pledge allegiance to him.
