machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of ʿAmr b. Shuraḥbīl, from ʿAbdullāh, who said: A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, which sin is greatest?" – the hadith. He said: Manṣūr narrates it from Abū Wāʾil, from Abū Maysarah, from ʿAbdullāh. And al-Aʿmash narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Thawrī, Maʿmar, Jarīr and ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAmr b. Shuraḥbīl, from ʿAbdullāh. But Abū Shihāb al-Ḥannāṭ, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr and Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān contradicted them, and narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbdullāh. Likewise Wāṣil al-Aḥdab narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah and Mahdī b. Maymūn narrated it from Wāṣil, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbdullāh. But ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Wāṣil, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAmr b. Shuraḥbīl, from ʿAbdullāh, and he erred (wahima) regarding al-Thawrī. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿUbaydillāh al-Nakhaʿī narrated it from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbdullāh. The correct (ṣaḥīḥ) one is the hadith of ʿAmr b. Shuraḥbīl.
