✧ A man came to ʿAbd Allāh, and he mentioned the story and began to narrate from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: “The first man whose hand was cut off in Islam—or among the Muslims—was a man brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and it was said: ‘O Messenger of God, this man has stolen.’ It was as if the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ was sprinkled with ashes. Some of them said: ‘O Messenger of God, what is wrong with you?’ He said: ‘What prevents me, when you are the helpers of Satan against your companion? God, Mighty and Majestic, is Forgiving and loves forgiveness. It is not appropriate for a ruler to have a prescribed punishment brought to him without carrying it out.’ Then he recited: ‘Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that God should forgive you? And God is Forgiving, Merciful.’”
