✧ I was hiding behind the curtains of the Kaaba, and three men came: a Qurayshi and his two in-laws, Thaqafis—or a Thaqafi and his two Qurayshi in-laws—large of bellies and little of understanding. They spoke about something I did not hear. One of them said: “Do you think God hears our words now?” Another said: “If we raise our voices, He hears; if we do not raise them, He does not hear.” The third said: “If He hears any of it, He hears all of it.” I mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: “And you were not hiding yourselves lest your hearing, your sight, and your skins testify against you” until His saying: “And that was your assumption which you assumed about your Lord; it has brought you to ruin, and you have become among the losers.”
