✧ Ibn 'Abbas addressed the people at the end of Ramadan and said: O people of Basra, pay the zakah of your fasting. He said: The people began looking at one another, so he said: Who here is from the people of Madinah? Stand up and teach your brothers, for they do not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made the sadaqah of Ramadan obligatory: half a sa' of wheat, or a sa' of barley, or a sa' of dates, upon the free and the slave, male and female.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335

machine translationThe hadith has one defect (ʿillah), namely that al-Ḥasan did not hear from Ibn ʿAbbās.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

  • ʿAlī al-Madīnī

machine translationAl-Ḥasan did not hear from Ibn ʿAbbās.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335
  • Ibn Rajab

machine translationThe sound report is what al-Ḥasan narrated, saying: "Ibn ʿAbbās delivered a sermon."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335
  • ʿAlī al-Madīnī

machine translationAl-Ḥasan did not hear from Ibn ʿAbbās, nor did he ever see him; he was in Medina in the days when Ibn ʿAbbās was in charge of Basra.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335

machine translationThe narrators of the hadith are trustworthy (thiqāt) and well known, but it contains a break in the chain (irsāl), for al-Ḥasan did not hear from Ibn ʿAbbās, according to what has been said. However, in the Musnad of Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī there is a hadith from al-Ḥasan in which he said: "Ibn ʿAbbās informed me." If this is established, it indicates that he heard from him.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335
  • Bazzār

machine translationIt is not known that al-Ḥasan narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās anything other than this hadith, and al-Ḥasan did not hear from Ibn ʿAbbās. His saying "he addressed us" means he addressed the people of Basra; al-Ḥasan did not witness the sermon, and had not yet entered Basra, because Ibn ʿAbbās delivered the sermon on the day of the Camel, while al-Ḥasan entered in the days of Ṣiffīn.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 3335
