✧ I came to Umar b. al-Khattab among people from my tribe. He began assigning stipends of two thousand to each man of Tayyi', while turning away from me. He said: I faced him, and he turned away from me; then I came to him from the direction of his face, and he turned away from me. I said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, do you recognize me?' He laughed until he lay back on his neck, then said, 'Yes, by Allah, I recognize you. You believed when they disbelieved, you came forward when they turned back, and you were loyal when they betrayed. The first charity that brightened the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the faces of his Companions was the charity of Tayyi', which you brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Then he began to apologize, and then said, 'I only assigned stipends to people whom poverty had afflicted, and they are the leaders of their clans for the obligations that befall them.'
