Musnad Ahmad 2919

Translation

✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in the courtyard of his house in Makkah, Uthman b. Maz'un passed by him and smiled at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Will you not sit down?" He said: "Yes." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat facing him. While he was talking to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his eyes to the sky and looked at the sky for a while. Then he began lowering his gaze until he placed it on his right side on the ground. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from his sitting companion Uthman to where he had placed his gaze, and he began nodding his head as if he were trying to understand what was being said to him, while Ibn Maz'un looked on. When he had fulfilled his need and understood what was being said to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his eyes to the sky as he had raised them the first time, and he followed it with his gaze until it disappeared into the sky. Then he turned back to Uthman to his original sitting position. He said: "O Muhammad, in the time I have been sitting with you and coming to you, I have never seen you do what you did this morning!" He said: "And what did you see me do?" He said: "I saw you raise your eyes to the sky, then you placed your gaze where you placed it on your right side, and you turned toward it and left me, and you began nodding your head as if you were trying to understand something being said to you." He said: "Did you notice that?" Uthman said: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A messenger of Allah came to me just now while you were sitting." He said: "A messenger of Allah?!" He said: "Yes." He said: "What did he say to you?" He said: "Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and He forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed." Uthman said: "That was when faith became firmly established in my heart, and I loved Muhammad."
