✧ The Muslims loved that the Romans should prevail over the Persians because they were People of the Book, and the polytheists loved that the Persians should prevail over the Romans because they were people of idols. So the Muslims mentioned that to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Verily, they will be defeated.' Abu Bakr mentioned that to them, and they said: 'Set a term between us and you. If they prevail, you get such and such, and if we prevail, we get such and such.' So he set a term of five years between them. But they did not prevail, so Abu Bakr mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: 'Why did you not make it—I think he said—less than ten?' He said: Sa'id said: 'Biḍʿ means less than ten.' He said: Then the Romans prevailed after that. That is His saying, Exalted is He: 'Alif Lām Mīm. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, and they, after their defeat, will prevail within biḍʿ years.' He said: The Romans were defeated, then they prevailed afterwards. He said: 'To Allah belongs the command before and after, and on that day the believers will rejoice at the victory of Allah.' He said: The believers rejoice at the victory of Allah.
