✧ He sent a servant boy of his with a saʿ of wheat, saying to him, “Sell it, then buy barley with its price.” The boy went and bought a saʿ and a bit more than a saʿ. When Maʿmar came, the boy informed him of that, and Maʿmar said to him, “Did you do that? Go and return it, and take only like for like, for I used to hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Food for food, like for like.’” And our food then was barley. It was said, “But it is not the same.” He said, “I fear that it may be a form of riba.”
