✧ Al-Zubayr married me, and he had on earth no wealth, no slave, and nothing, except his horse. She said: So I used to feed his horse, take care of its upkeep, tend it, crush date stones for his water-carrying camel, feed it, draw water, mend its bucket, and knead dough. I was not good at baking, so some women of the Ansar, who were truthful women, baked for me. I used to carry date stones from the land of al-Zubayr, which the Messenger of God ﷺ had allotted to him, on my head, and it was about two-thirds of a farsakh from me. She said: One day I came with date stones on my head and met the Messenger of God ﷺ with a group of his companions. He called me, then said: Ikh ikh, to seat me behind him. She said: I felt ashamed to travel with the men, and I remembered al-Zubayr and his jealousy. She said: And he was the most jealous of people. The Messenger of God ﷺ knew that I had become ashamed, so he went on. I came to al-Zubayr and said: The Messenger of God ﷺ met me while date stones were on my head, and with him was a group of his companions. He made his camel kneel so that I might ride with him, but I was ashamed and aware of your jealousy. He said: By God, your carrying the date stones was harder on me than your riding with him. She said: After that, Abu Bakr sent me a servant who took care of the horse for me, and it was as if he had set me free.
