✧ When they wanted to wash the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they differed about it. They said: “By Allah, we do not know what to do. Should we strip the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as we strip our dead, or wash him with his clothes on?” She said: When they differed, Allah sent drowsiness upon them, until by Allah there was no man among the people except that his chin was on his chest, asleep. She said: Then someone spoke to them from the side of the house, and they did not know who it was, saying: “Wash the Prophet ﷺ with his clothes on.” She said: They rose to him and washed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in his shirt, pouring water and lote-tree leaves over him, and the men rubbed him through the shirt. She used to say: If I had known then what I know now, none but his wives would have washed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
