✧ God, Blessed and Exalted, did not grant victory in any battle as He did on the day of Uhud. He said: We found that strange. Ibn Abbas said: "Between me and whoever denies that is the Book of God, Blessed and Exalted. God, Mighty and Majestic, says regarding the day of Uhud: 'And God did indeed fulfill His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission.' Ibn Abbas said: 'Al-hass means killing. Until when you lost courage, to His saying: 'And God has pardoned you, and God is possessor of bounty for the believers.' He meant by this the archers. The Prophet ﷺ stationed them in a position and said: 'Protect our backs. If you see us being killed, do not help us, and if you see us gaining spoils, do not share with us.' When the Prophet ﷺ gained spoils and they allowed the polytheists' camp, all the archers rushed down and entered the camp to plunder. The ranks of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ had met, and they were like this—and he interlaced his fingers—and became entangled. When the archers left that gap where they had been, the cavalry entered from that position upon the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and they struck one another and became entangled. Many Muslims were killed. At the beginning of the day, the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions had the upper hand, until seven or nine of the bearers of the polytheists' banner were killed. The Muslims made a turn toward the mountain but did not reach the cave as people say; they were only below al-Mihras. Satan cried out: 'Muhammad has been killed.' There was no doubt that it was true. We remained like that, not doubting that he had been killed, until the Messenger of God ﷺ appeared between the two Sa'ds, and we recognized him by his swaying when he walked. He said: We rejoiced as if what had befallen us had not befallen us. He said: He climbed toward us saying: 'God's anger is severe against a people who bloodied the face of His Messenger.' He said: Another time he said: 'O God, it is not for them to overpower us,' until he reached us and stayed for a while. Then Abu Sufyan shouted from the bottom of the mountain: 'Exalted be Hubal'—twice, meaning his deity—'Where is the son of Abu Kabshah? Where is the son of Abu Quhafah? Where is the son of al-Khattab?' Umar said: 'O Messenger of God, shall I answer him?' He said: 'Yes.' When he said: 'Exalted be Hubal,' Umar said: 'God is higher and more majestic.' Abu Sufyan said: 'O son of al-Khattab, the eye has been favored, so return from it, or desist from it.' He said: 'Where is the son of Abu Kabshah? Where is the son of Abu Quhafah? Where is the son of al-Khattab?' Umar said: 'This is the Messenger of God ﷺ, this is Abu Bakr, and here I am Umar.' Abu Sufyan said: 'A day for the day of Badr. Days alternate, and war has its turns.' Umar said: 'Not equal. Our slain are in Paradise, and your slain are in the Fire.' He said: 'You claim that. Then we have been disappointed and lost.' Then Abu Sufyan said: 'You will find mutilation among your slain, and that was not by the opinion of our leaders.' He said: Then the zeal of ignorance overtook him. He said: 'Indeed, that happened, and he did not dislike it.'
