حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلٌ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ

وَاللهِ مَا خُيِّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ أَمْرَيْنِ قَطُّ إِلَّا أَخَذَ أَيْسَرَهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَأْثَمْ، فَإِذَا كَانَ الْإِثْمُ كَانَ أَبْعَدَهُمْ مِنْهُ، وَاللهِ مَا انْتَقَمَ لِنَفْسِهِ فِي شَيْءٍ يُؤْتَى إِلَيْهِ قَطُّ حَتَّى تُنْتَهَكَ حُرُمَاتُ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَيَنْتَقِمَ لِلهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

Translation

✧ By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was never given a choice between two matters except that he took the easier of the two as long as it was not a sin. If it was a sin, he was the furthest of people from it. By Allah, he never took revenge for himself over anything that was done to him unless the sacred limits of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, were violated, in which case he would take revenge for the sake of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
