✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ fell ill with the illness in which he died, Bilal came to him to announce the prayer. He said: “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” We said: “O Messenger of God, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man”—al-Aʿmash said: “soft-hearted”—“and whenever he stands in your place he weeps and cannot manage it. If only you would order ʿUmar.” He said: “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” We said: “O Messenger of God, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man, and whenever he stands in your place he weeps and cannot manage it. If only you would order ʿUmar to lead the people in prayer.” He said: “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer, for you are like the companions of Yusuf.” So we sent for Abu Bakr, and he led the people in prayer. Then the Prophet ﷺ felt some relief, and he came out supported between two men, his feet dragging on the ground. When Abu Bakr sensed him, he started to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him, meaning “Stay where you are.” The Prophet ﷺ came and sat beside Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr was following the Prophet ﷺ, and the people were following Abu Bakr.
