حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ
كُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ: لَا يَمُوتُ نَبِيٌّ حَتَّى يُخَيَّرَ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، قَالَتْ: فَأَصَابَتْهُ بُحَّةٌ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ: فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُولَئِكَ رَفِيقًا فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ خُيِّرَ.

✧ I used to hear that no prophet dies until he is given the choice between this world and the Hereafter. She said: He developed hoarseness in the illness in which he died, and I heard him say: "With those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor, of the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous — and excellent are those as companions." So I thought that he was given the choice.
