✧ I went out on the day of the Trench, following in the tracks of the people. She said: I heard the rumbling of the earth behind me, meaning the sound of the earth. She said: I turned, and there was Sa'd b. Mu'adh, and with him was his nephew al-Harith b. Aws, carrying his shield. She said: I sat down on the ground, and Sa'd passed by wearing an iron coat of mail from which its edges protruded, and I feared for the edges of Sa'd. She said: Sa'd was one of the greatest and tallest of the people. She said: He passed by while reciting rajaz and saying: 'Linger a little, so the battle may overtake the bearer; how excellent is death when the appointed time has come.' She said: I got up and entered a garden, where there was a group of Muslims, among them Umar b. al-Khattab, and among them a man wearing a tasbighah of his, meaning a helmet. Umar said: What brought you here? By my life, by Allah, you are indeed bold, and what assures you that there will not be a trial, or a withdrawal? She said: He kept blaming me until I wished that the earth would split open for me at that moment and I would enter it. She said: The man raised the tasbighah from his face, and it was Talhah b. Ubayd Allah, who said: O Umar, woe to you, you have spoken too much since today; and where is the withdrawal or flight except to Allah, Mighty and Majestic? She said: A man from the polytheists of Quraysh called Ibn al-Ariqah shot an arrow at Sa'd and said to him: Take it, and I am Ibn al-Ariqah. It struck his median vein and severed it. Sa'd called upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and said: O Allah, do not let me die until You cool my eyes from Qurayzah. She said: They were his allies and clients in the pre-Islamic era. She said: His wound healed, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent the wind upon the polytheists, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, spared the believers from fighting; and Allah is Strong, Mighty. Abu Sufyan and those with him joined Tihamah, and Uyaynah b. Badr and those with him joined Najd, and Banu Qurayzah returned and fortified themselves in their strongholds. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to Madinah, laid down his weapons, and ordered a tent of tanned leather, which was pitched over Sa'd in the mosque. She said: Jibril ﷺ came to him, with traces of dust on his front teeth, and said: Have you laid down your weapons? No, by Allah, the angels have not yet laid down their weapons. Go out to Banu Qurayzah and fight them. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put on his armor and announced to the people to depart, that they should go out. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and passed by Banu Ghanm, who were neighbors of the mosque around it, and said: Who passed by you? They said: Dihyah al-Kalbi passed by us. Dihyah al-Kalbi's beard and face resembled Jibril ﷺ. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and besieged them for twenty-five nights. When the siege became severe and the hardship intensified, it was said to them: Descend upon the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They consulted Abu Lubabah b. Abd al-Mundhir, and he indicated to them that it was slaughter. They said: We will descend upon the judgment of Sa'd b. Mu'adh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Descend upon the judgment of Sa'd b. Mu'adh. They descended, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Sa'd b. Mu'adh. He was brought on a donkey with a packsaddle of palm fiber, carried on it, and his people surrounded him, saying: O Abu Amr, your allies, your clients, and the people of valor, and those whom you know. She said: He did not respond to them at all, nor did he turn to them, until when he drew near to their dwellings, he turned to his people and said: The time has come for me not to care, in the cause of Allah, about the blame of any blamer. He said: Abu Sa'id said: When he appeared before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: Arise to your master and help him down. Umar said: Our master is Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He said: Help him down. So they helped him down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Judge among them. Sa'd said: I judge among them that their fighters be killed, their women and children be taken captive, and their wealth be divided - and Yazid said in Baghdad: and it be divided. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You have judged among them with the judgment of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and the judgment of His Messenger. She said: Then Sa'd supplicated: O Allah, if You have kept anything of the war with Quraysh for Your Prophet ﷺ, keep me for it; and if You have ended the war between him and them, take me to You. She said: His wound burst open, and it had healed so that nothing was visible of it except something like the hole of an earring, and he returned to his tent which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had pitched for him. Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar attended him. She said: By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I recognize the weeping of Umar from the weeping of Abu Bakr while I am in my chamber, and they were as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: merciful among themselves. Alqamah said: I said: O mother, how did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ act? She said: His eye did not shed tears for anyone, but when he felt grief, he would seize his beard.
